June is World Refugee Month, and to celebrate the wonderful contribution immigrants of all walks have made to Australia, I've painted my nails blue with Arcane Lacquer Erudite Charm, a blue creme with pink, copper and gold shimmer.
Australia's politicians and Murdoch-controlled media have been purposefully misguiding the Australian public on asylum seekers in the recent past. Many myths, like that Australia is being flooded with asylum seekers (we take far less than many other developed countries, based on our population), that "boat people" are illegal immigrants (there's nothing illegal about seeking asylum, and there's no "queue") have been perpetuated by the media, and capitalised upon by politicians.
It honestly frightens me how the two major political parties in Australia are competing to be the "toughest" on these people, displaced by war, fleeing for their lives. You don't pay an extortionate price, leave your family behind, board a shitty leaking boat and sail across choppy open ocean unless you're fleeing something far worse.
I'd like to think that something like the Holocaust would've had far less of a death toll if it happened again, thanks to international human rights treaties and modern transportation. But sadly, while refugees were welcomed with open arms half a century ago, we've taken a major step back with our compassion.
